This’ll be a short post, but it’s one that I feel really strongly about.
I got this picture on my Facebook feed today – as I’m sure many of you did, too.
On the one hand, I get the point; on the other, it made me feel extremely uncomfortable. If you’ve been reading me at all, you know I’m in the bag for President Obama and I’m a huge fan of Michelle. That said, this hits me as an incredibly low blow.
I absolutely believe that the Romney’s are universes out of touch with the regular people in America. I can hardly believe that anyone who isn’t part of the 1% can listen to Mitt Romney and think he’ll do them any good. But that’s a fight between the two candidates and I don’t think that simply by standing up at a convention and advocating for their husbands either of these women deserves to be shot down for their attire or their looks.
Ann Romney is a beautiful 63-year-old woman and Michelle Obama is a beautiful 48-year-old woman. You can’t compare the two directly. They are part of two different generations and two different life experiences. It’s classic apples and oranges.
Ann’s clothes are far more expensive than Michelle’s and, frankly, I like Michelle’s a lot better, but these were big nights for both women and they ought to have brought out their big guns. Last I read, the Obamas are worth about $5 million; the Romneys about $250 million. The cost of the guns reflect the difference. And really, wouldn’t we all make fun of Ann if she went out and bought an outfit at Penney’s to prove she “got” the little people?
Moreover, Ann is a breast cancer survivor with multiple sclerosis. If I were a 63-year-old who’d made it through breast cancer and was dealing with MS, I would buy whatever freaking clothes and shoes I felt like. While I wish Ann would give me a call for some styling advice, I applaud her for going for it.
P.S. Whoever made the photo needs to learn how to spell “Dominican.”
