I found this gem in my Twitter feed this morning:
Eric Cantor @GOPLeader
Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success.
Sometimes I think the Republicans are working specifically to tick me off. And at times like this, they succeed completely.
In all seriousness, how out of touch can a person be? It’s Labor Day. It’s not Entrepreneur Day. It’s not Business Owner Day. It’s not 1% day. It’s one of those magic things in the world that is exactly what it says it is: a day to honor labor and laborers.
How do you get that wrong? How do you hold an important national position and get that wrong? Mr. Cantor isn’t a moron, so this can only prove that he’s a manipulator working on his master’s in Doublespeak. In the process, he shows that he’s a patronizing elitist.
Here’s the description of Labor Day from the U.S. Dept. of Labor website:
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Nowhere in there do I see any reference to taking risks or building businesses. Labor Day isn’t about either of those things. It’s about regular people who work hard every day but don’t have the desire or the ability to build the next Microsoft or Amazon or Bain Capital. Labor Day is about workers.
I know it’s only a tweet, which is a shame. It’ll probably just fly into the ether and barely be noticed. But it’s such a vivid look into the crazy world view of the Republican Party.
How about letting the regular people have one day, Mr. Cantor? How about celebrating all the people the “job creators” need to make their businesses work? How about not spitting their eyes – just for today?
